Website Defacement

Defacement of a website is an attack on a website that changes its visual appearance. This is usually done by a team of hackers who hack into a web server and modify your site with one of their own.

The most common method of defacement is to use SQL Injections to log on to administrative accounts. Defacements usually consist of an entire page containing a defacer alias or "hacking codename". Sometimes the defacer mocks the system administrator for failing to maintain server security. However, defacement is usually harmless, but can sometimes be used to hide even more malicious actions such as downloading malware or deleting essential files from the server.
